Nagato Yumoto Onsen is the oldest onsen town in Yamaguchi with a history of over 600 years. From the end of January to the beginning of March every year, fantastical lights and sounds decorate several areas of around Otozure River after dark.

Many of the displays are set to the words of Misuzu Kaneko (1903 - 1930), a notable Japanese poet born in Nagato, and approximately 3,000 lights themed after her poets. Along with the illuminations, the beautiful sounds come together with her poet’s reading during the event.

With the cooperation of kindergartens, elementary school, and junior high school in Nagato, more than 3,000 lanterns grace Nagato Yumoto Onsen.

In addition to the children’s’ lightening creative motifs, Hagi yaki pottery lampshades made by local elementary school students with the help of teachers from the Fukagawa kiln with a history of about 360 years illuminate the night with warm light.
