YAKUSHIMA - A Unique Island Paradise
|
The rugged and breathtakingly beautiful island of Yakushima, off the coast of Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu, attracts nature-lovers from all over the world with its unique mix of flora and fauna, including ancient yakusugi (Yakushima cedar) trees that are thousands of years old and its own indigenous wildlife. About a fifth of the island is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The island offers plenty of attractions, especially for the outdoors-inclined. Hiking in the mountains is a popular activity, especially on the highest peak, Mt. Miyanoura. The island also boasts beautiful beaches with pretty reefs offshore, as well as excellent scuba diving spots.

Wildlife is a special treat here. On Yakushima, it seems that everywhere you look you can see some strange and wonderful natural phenomenon. In addition to the famous trees in their rainforest home, there are indigenous Yakushima monkeys (yakusaru), deer (yakushika) and one of the few giant sea turtle nesting sites in the world at Nagata Inakahama Beach.
Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine offers nature tours in primeval forest amid the spectacular, rugged landscape. Hiking trails up to the famous Jomon Sugi (at 7,200 years old one of the oldest trees in the world) and other ancient trees cross through the ravine.
Several beautiful waterfalls grace the island, including the famous Oko-no-taki (Great River Falls), the highest in Kyushu; Senpiro Falls, which cascades down an entire mountain face when it rains; and Toroki Falls, which falls directly from a cliff into the ocean with a thunderous roar.
Yakusugi Land is a theme park that allows visitors to experience many of the attractions of the island. Huge trees from the primeval forest, such as the famous 1,800-year-old Buddha Sugi, as well as wildlife and lovely mountain vistas, can be seen along Yakusugi Land's beautiful hiking trails.

Yakushima, a quick 30-minute flight off the coast of Japan's southern main island of Kyushu, is famous for its indigenous flora and fauna, including ancient yakusugi (Yakushima cedar) trees. About a fifth of the island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which attracts nature-lovers from all over the world.
Sankara has ambitions beyond being a premium, five-star hotel with superlative service and outstanding food. In keeping with its spectacular but ecologically delicate setting, the management of Sankara (a Sanskrit word meaning "bounty from heaven") take their responsibility to the community and the environment seriously, doing everything they can to make their operations organic, environment-friendly, and good for both the earth and the local Yakushima community.
"Yakushima is a very special place," said the hotel manager, "both ecologically and culturally, and a lot of people come here to see the beautiful nature. But until now there was no place for very wealthy people who demand a high level of service, as well as celebrities and others with special privacy needs, to stay. We are now here to fill that gap with Sankara."
The essence of the premium luxury experience is, of course, service, and this is where Sankara really earns its five stars. Sankara has done away with the usual check-in counter and bellhops in favor of a personal butler for every guest, the better to ensure that every need is met, with the friendliest and most attentive service possible. As Butler Keiko Sunayama noted, "The staff are what make Sankara the special place it is." Most of the staff are bilingual in Japanese and English, and several other languages are spoken as well.
