- NEW PROPERTIES JOINED THE RYOKAN COLLECTION -
HAKONE SUISHOEN AND ATAMI FUFU
We are pleased to announce that two luxury properties Hakone Suishoen and Atami Fufu have just joined The Ryokan Collection. Now totaling 30 Japanese ryokan and small unique hotels, The Ryokan Collection continues to offer unforgettable experiences of Japanese traditions and the spirit of hospitality to international luxury travelers.
Hakone Suishoen (Kanagawa Prefecture)
Entering Hakone Suishoen is like stepping into another world - a timeless world of serenity and calm, peace and tranquility, and unsurpassed luxury. It can be a little surreal, too - only 40 minutes on the whispering Shinkansen bullet train brings you from the frenzied hustle and bustle of Tokyo to this beautiful luxury ryokan, which graces the top end of accommodation in the sleepy resort town of Hakone.

In the central courtyard of Suishoen is an elegant old building that was once the country home of the Mitsui family. Built in 1925, this magnificent structure is not just beautiful - it's a piece of history, listed as a Registered Cultural Asset by the Japanese government. It was transported here from its original location to serve as both the literal and the aesthetic center of Suishoen. With its old-time feel and prewar atmosphere, the building is an elegant and timeless venue for dining in the Momiji restaurant and relaxing in the lounge.

Suishoen's interior design is a modern take on traditional design. Carefully placed artworks and elegant furniture provide both a Japanese sense of place and warm, comfortable surroundings. Traditional design elements, such as Edo karakami - a kind of paper that has been popular for centuries for decorating sliding doors and walls - grace the interiors of the ryokan's 23 rooms with ancient accents. Amid the timeless sounds of birdsong, babbling water, and breezes rustling in the bamboo leaves and whistling in the pine forests, Hakone Suishoen is a place where you can be at peace, in an environment you will never forget.

Atami Fufu (Shizuoka Prefecture)
The beautiful Atami Fufu ryokan is a fairly new facility, having opened only in 2004; nevertheless, it embodies the very essence of omotenashi, the Japanese fine art of hospitality, whose attitudes and practices have been refined over centuries.

You first encounter Atami Fufu ryokan as you cross a bridge over a rushing brook that is warm from the Atami hot spring source. An enormous rock sculpture out front announces that this is a ryokan that is both luxurious and innovative in its approach to personalized service, as you ease into the delightful, relaxing Fufu experience.

A pleasant 40-minute ride from Tokyo on a Shinkansen bullet train brings you to Atami station, where the ryokan's shuttle bus will take you from the station to the ryokan - a friendly and painless transition from the hustle-bustle of the city into a world of serenity, friendly pampering, fine dining and personalized service.

Fufu's staff are highly trained in the sublime art of omotenashi, and the ryokan has all the comforts and convenience one would expect from a modern, premium hotel, including in-room check-in and check-out, first-class spa treatments, unsurpassed gourmet kaiseki Japanese haute cuisine, and round-the-clock butler service.

The town of Atami is a charming resort destination, and has been for centuries, and there are plenty of pleasant and fun things to do in the area. The neighborhoods surrounding Fufu are full of pretty nooks and hideaways, as well as numerous hotels and private houses, perched precariously on the steep mountainsides surrounding the town - a wonderful place to explore.
