THE STORY

Nestled among the volcanic peaks of Hakone sits the hot spring town of Gora and a luxury mountain resort from ryokan brand FUFU.

Inspired by the austere beauty of the surrounding wilderness, the 39 spacious rooms are decorated in muted earth tones and richly textured natural materials. Each features a private hot spring view bath with windows that slide back to admit fresh breezes and the gentle sounds of the forest.

At restaurant Yamanoe, the dining experience is defined by choice. While most ryokans have a set menu, FUFU Hakone allows guests to customize their kaiseki course from a seasonal prix fixe menu including washoku classics and original dishes that make creative use of Hakone’s bounty of Pacific seafood and produce from the foothills of Mt. Fuji. A six-seat teppan counter gives meat-loving guests the opportunity to see juicy wagyu steaks grilled before their eYes. And a deep cellar of both wines and sakes offers extensive pairing options.

While the in-room baths are sourced from an alkaline hot spring deep below the resort, the calcium-rich waters of the panoramic communal bath come from nearby Owakudani, allowing guests to enjoy two drastically different sources. Meanwhile, spa HINoKA serves up an entirely different bathing experience: a cradle of fermenting hinoki wood powder that naturally heats the body like a sauna.

From a massive, ikebana-decorated plinth in the entrance way to small accents in the rooms, the resort is decorated with authentic Komatsu stone, a local form of andesite formed by lava flows some 300,000 years ago. Prized for its density and resistance to erosion, it was once used to construct castles for feudal lords. Now, as stately monuments to the glacial pace of geological change, the stones serve as gentle reminder to slow down and savor a renewing moment of relaxation at FUFU Hakone.

FACILITIES &
SERVICES

  • Yamanoe A lively open kitchen set off by a stone counter greets guests as they pass through the traditional welcoming noren curtain, giving a glimpse of the delicacies headed their way. A two-tier arrangement in the dining room gives tables a view of a panoramic window that looks like a theater facing the mountains or entrancingly shifting mists depending on the weather. Dark cloth screens provide privacy between tables or guests can opt to sit at the intimate six-seat teppan counter, Ishizue. Muted earthy grays, browns, and greens dominate the minimalist décor, allowing the gorgeous stone, lacquer, and ceramic tableware to stand out. They are all hand-picked from famous craft centers like Arita and Wajima, demonstrating how Japan’s traditional artisans, like its chefs, turn raw natural materials into works of exquisite beauty.
  • Cuisine FUFU’s chef draws on his extensive experience at other FUFU resorts to craft an expansive seasonal kaiseki menu with prix fixe options so guests can flexibly customize their dining experience. The menu includes classic and original dishes, as well as signature creations from other properties adapted to Hakone’s local produce. Located within easy reach of the fishing ports on the Pacific coast and the agriculture-rich foothills of Fuji, the FUFU Hakone kitchen boasts a bounty of seafood and fresh fruits and vegetables. Iconic black wagyu beef is the star of the teppan, while washoku delicacies like abalone, spiny lobster, and eel appear in various incarnations in the options for the simmered, grilled, fried and rice courses, accompanied by seasonal produce at its peak.
  • Bar Utsugi By day, the lounge is the venue for check-in, with private high-backed sofas facing panoramic windows so that guests are greeted with a striking view of the surrounding mountains. When night falls, the focus shifts to the stately wood-topped bar. Atop a bank of rough stone, as if carved from the earth itself, the bar exudes a peaceful sense of nature’s abiding beauty. Twin landscapes by photographer Taiji Matsue provide a backdrop. They show the same mountainside 3 years apart, another indicator that time flows differently here. Beyond the reach of life’s hectic obligations, this timeless space invites guests to stop and savor the moment with a peaty whisky, sake flight, or seasonal fruit cocktail, bountiful gifts from the natural world.
  • HINOKA HINOKA Spa’s signature En-Hinoka fermented hinoki powder bath is an all-natural, detoxifying sauna experience like no other. Guests are gently cocooned in a mountain of cloud-soft hinoki powder sourced from ancient forests in Nara. Natural fermentation enzymes at work on the wood release heat and moisture without the need for electricity, enveloping the body in a pleasantly scented warmth that encourages circulation, promotes relaxation, and beautifies skin. Afterward, guests are invited to relax in a private lounge and rehydrate with an enzyme drink specially formulated to extend the bath’s benefits. Alternately, they can take advantage of the massage menu while their muscles are at their most limber.
  • Communal Bath Each guest room has a private bath filled from Gora’s own clear, chloride springs, but the spacious communal baths come from a different source: the steamy volcanic vents of Owakudani. These waters have an entrancing milky sheen thanks to high levels of skin-frienly natrium and calcium. During the day, the baths offer panoramic mountain views framed by forest boughs, but the experience is sublime at night, when the dim overhead lights cast reflections on the water that pirouette silently across the ceiling and make crystals in the stone walls glimmer like stars.
