THE STORY

Within walking distance of the famed Nikko Toshogu Shrine, FUFU Nikko sits next to Tamozawa Imperial Villa grounds, surrounded in all seasons by the gentle susurrus of the river below. From the snow-decked depths of winter to the lush, cool highland summers, it offers an unforgettable experience of the natural beauty that has beckoned generations of Japanese nobility.

This connection to nature is a key component in all 24 rooms, each featuring a completely unique design and private hot spring bath. Tactile fabrics like velvet and silk not often found in today's trendy austerity join brass accents, botanical motifs, and warm wood paneling for an almost nostalgic air of luxury, accented by the shifting tones of Tochigi's chameleon-like Oya stone. The pleasing mix of traditional elements like yushoku-monyo embroidered silks and Western decor like parquet flooring follows the example of the imperial villa next door, which is known for blending the traditional aesthetic of the Edo Period with the international influences of the Meiji.

A similar borderlessness underpins the dining concept for kaiseki restaurant Setchu and teppanyaki Kou, where the contrasting textures of East and West are used to realize singularly beautiful creations. In a range of full-course dinner options, quintessential Japanese delicacies like sea urchin and wagyu meet imports like caviar and truffles in delightful configurations, complemented by exquisite artworks of tableware like indigo porcelain plates worked with phoenixes of delicate silver filigree.

For communal relaxation, there is also a large outdoor hot spring, a riverside terrace, and an elegantly appointed lounge that serves an afternoon tea set with signature blends by day and free-flowing champagne and cocktails before dinner before turning into a sultry bar space by night.

No honored guest of the court was ever treated better.

FACILITIES &
SERVICES

  • Cuisine Like royalty who embody the ideals of the country while exuding effortless composure abroad, the cuisine at FUFU Nikko spans worlds without losing its intrinsic Japaneseness. Sourcing from a farm in the prefecture that also supplies the imperial household, the chef creates menus blending kaiseki and haute cuisine courses, all presented on exquisitely decorated porcelain and lacquerware fit for the emperor's table. Kaiseki's big three delicacies—sea urchin, squid ink, and konowata—dance with the West's three showstoppers—caviar, foie gras, and truffles—to create delightful surprises like sesame-dressed hijiki seaweed noodles topped with caviar and cauliflower or fresh fig wrapped in konbu-brined tilefish sashimi.
  • Setchu The name, which might be loosely translated as 'in season', is a reference to the hyperseasonality of Japanese kaiseki. Indeed, the 15 private dining rooms and many of the dishes take a name from among the 24 seasons and 72 sub-seasons in the traditional calendar, which describe the delicate day-by-day changes in nature throughout the year. Gazing out on the moonlit garden from the private dining rooms, guests might enjoy both a view and a dish embodying momiji tsuta kibamu (The Maple and Ivory Turn Yellow). Ensconced in intimate booths of warm wood patterns and textured glass, diners are offered a refined experience of the inextricable bonds between nature and cuisine.
  • Kou With a textured Oya stone wall shielding the space from the main restaurant and lush red velvet curtains and separate entrances providing privacy even from other Kou guests, the 9 seats at this copper-topped counter offer a truly exclusive dining experience. A dedicated chef will prepare a full-course meal before your eyes on the teppan grill, with a richly marbled Tochigi wagyu steak taking pride of place. Enthroned on buttery soft charcoal-toned armchairs, guests are invited to enjoy the rarified atmosphere of flawless service, elegant presentation, and subtle attention to detail of an imperial dinner party.
  • Bath While every room comes with a private hot spring bath, the larger public baths allow guests to enjoy the quintessential Japanese communal bathing experience. They are also nestled in a secluded tree-shaded nook nearer to the Tamozawa River, where the sound of the waters reverberates more strongly. The hotel's spring supplies piping hot alkaline waters said to be especially beneficial for easing respiratory complaints and improving circulation. Each gender-segregated bathing area features an indoor and outdoor pool of laurel-tinted Oya stone, as well as a small powder room stocked with FUFU Nikko's original organic amenities and cold water and beer for a post-bath refresher.
  • Art & Architecture The design of the hotel is largely inspired by the aesthetic of the Tamozawa Imperial Villa next door. Its distinctive mix of traditional Japanese luxury and the international influences of the turn of the 20th century can be seen throughout, with the unexpectedly synchronistic juxtaposition of domestic and foreign, antique and modern, even analog and digital: every room features an antique gramophone retrofitted for use as a smartphone speaker. The hotel is also rife with the natural symbolism beloved in Japan. The imperial chrysanthemum and auspicious plum blossom often crop up, but other examples are subtler. In the entranceway, for example, guests are greeted by a 400-year-old cork azalea, emblem of Princess Aiko. It puts forth pure white flowers in May that represent a desire for sincerity and purity of heart. Learning about this iconography from the knowledgeable staff is one of the particular joys of FUFU Nikko.
  • FUFU Lounge Extending into the garden and separated only by floor-to-ceiling glass, the lounge provides a comfortable perch to enjoy Nikko's stunning natural beauty. Gentle classical music, a central fireplace, and tactile furnishings from high-backed velvet booths to low-slung leather armchairs appeal to all the senses, a subtle persuasion to sit back and relax that is impossible to ignore. In the afternoon, a charming afternoon tea set that pairs classics like financiers and macarons with seasonal Japanese nama wagashi is a perfect match for the original tea blends. Before dinner, champagne and other libations are free to enjoy. After dinner, the lights are dimmed to create a sultry bar space for a romantic post-prandial. Open to guests before and after check in as well.
