Tekisui
Housed in a separate building a short walk through a bamboo grove, Japanese restaurant Tekisui serves innovative Nara kaiseki for breakfast, lunch, teatime, and dinner. It is open to the public for lunch and tea, but uses all private rooms with garden views to retain an atmosphere of secluded luxury. Best enjoyed with a flight of Nara sakes, the menu enlivens local delicacies with inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine to get innovative dishes like Yamatoshi wagyu steaks wrapped in cork tree bark, smoked with persimmon and dong dang gui leaves, and topped with a miso lotus seed sauce. Dark yakisugi walls and dramatic lighting create a magical atmosphere heightened by the occasional deer passing through the garden. The second floor dining area can be converted into an event space accommodating up to 50.

Kuri
Housed in the same elegant building as Tekisui, Kuri serves dinnertime teppanyaki, a cuisine prepared before your eyes on a gleaming iron griddle. With just 12 counter seats, this venue provides an intimate experience in which you can engage with the friendly chefs on the finer points of the innovative Chinese medicine concept. A standout in the 9-course meal is Spanish mackerel topped with sansho butter and served on a bed of 13 different grilled vegetables chosen to provide a new flavor and texture with each bite. Excellent wine and sake flights are available, including rare bottles from 300-year-old Nara brewer Yucho Shuzo.
