Omotenashi Journey: from the world to Kaga

Beniya Mukayu’s exclusive program, “Omotenashi Journey,” explores the “Japanese Spirit of Harmony.“ This intimate private three-day, two-night stay offers corporate executives a place to gain new awareness and learn through the essence of Japanese culture and an opportunity to explore ancient Japanese arts and traditional crafts of Kaga.

Exploring the “Japanese Spirit of Harmony” through hospitality

This three days and two nights program explores the “Japanese Spirit of Harmony” through hospitality omotenashi at a Japanese inn ryokan. The architecture that blends the minimal interiors and the garden, the soft light filtered through shoji paper screens, and the sense of the seasons that can be appreciated everywhere are examples of the Japanese way of life in harmony with nature. These elements have been largely lost in modern Japanese urban life, but they can still be found at a ryokan.

Learning about traditional performing arts and traditional crafts of Kaga (optional)

In Kaga, traditional performing arts and crafts that have flourished since the Edo period (1603-1868) have been handed down until today and they continue to be refined to the highest standards. Guests can enjoy traditional performing arts in small groups, and they can also interact with the artists. In addition, workshops on various traditional crafts and rituals in the sacred spaces of temples and shrines allow guests to experience and learn about Japanese culture.

Beniya Mukayu Art and Architecture Tour

A tour of Beniya Mukayu focusing on art and architecture, introducing the artworks showcased inside the ryokan, including Replacement of Zero by Tatsuo Miyajima, one of Japan’s leading contemporary artists, and Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama, the architect of Beniya Mukayu; Tsukubai Hosun by the designer Kenya Hara and other artworks.

Welcome Tea Ceremony

Additional fee:5,500 yen/person
Tea ceremony by Beniya Mukayu’s 3rd generation owners Mr. Kazunari and Mrs. Sachiko Nakamichi, both tea masters of the Urasenke school of tea. The ceremony takes place in the Main Library, where the guests sit comfortably on a bench and enjoy a cup of matcha tea and the conversation with the owners.

Aperitif

Guests can enjoy an aperitif on the terrace of the Horin restaurant while watching the sun setting over the 300-year-old sacred Red Pine Tree. Finger food is served to accompany the drinks.

Enjoy the pairing of Beniya Mukayu’s kaiseki cuisine with wines, sake, and other drinks carefully selected by Beniya Mukayu’s sommelier.

Kaga Hosho Noh Performance

Additional fee:2,200,000 yen/performance
Noh is considered the pinnacle of Japanese traditional performing arts and it is said to be the oldest surviving theatre tradition in practice in the world. Since the Edo period (1603-1868), the lords of the Kaga domain have loved the Hosho-style Noh and passed it down generation after generation. For one night only, a Noh stage will be set up with a real 300-year-old sacred Red Pine Tree as a backdrop, for guests to enjoy a performance of Hosho Noh, the ultimate traditional performing art of Kaga.

Yamashiro Daidengaku Dance

Dengaku is a form of dance deeply rooted in Shintoism that was very popular until the Muromachi period (1392–1573) and then disappeared. Its revival Daidengaku is now part of the local tradition in Yamashiro, where it is performed every summer. On the spacious terrace of the Horin restaurant, guests can join the performers in “So-Dengaku” the climax of the performance, experiencing the charm of a dance that brings the local community together.

Gomataki Buddhist Fire Ritual at Yakuoin Onsenji Temple

Gomataki is an esoteric Buddhist ritual in which wooden sticks are burnt to pray for blessings such as protection from bad luck, good fortune, and good health. Guests bring wooden sticks with their wishes written on them and visit Yakuoin Onsenji Temple. The priest of Yakuoin Onsen-ji Temple and Yamabushi mountain ascetic hermits perform the gomataki ceremony, burning the participants’ wooden sticks and praying for blessings.

Gokito Shinto Purification Ritual at Hattori Shrine

Additional fee:66,000 yen/group (up to 16 people)
Guests visit Hattori Shrine in Yamashiro Onsen and attend the purification ritual performed by the priest and offer a tamagushi (branch of a sacred tree with paper strips attached) as a sign of worship.

Chashaku (tea scoop) Making Experience

Additional fee:16,500 yen/person
Chashaku tea scoop is a tool used to transfer the matcha tea from the tea container to the tea bowl chawan. The bamboo chashaku used in Japanese tea ceremony was originally whittled down by the tea masters themselves for tea gatherings, each considered a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ encounter, ichi-go ichi-e. First, guests use a small knife to shape the front and back of the tea scoop; then carve the tip kaisaki and cut the bottom kiridome according to their taste. Finally, they use brush and ink to write a seal, the name of the chashaku and their name on the container tsutsu.

Kinrande Experience

Guests can learn how to master gold leaf to decorate Kutaniyaki porcelain from the artists of one of the kilns that has excelled in this art, Kinzangama Kiln, founded and run by the Yoshita family since 1906. Guests meet the artists that design and realize stunning kinrande artworks, learn their techniques and apply gold leaf to colourful Kutaniyaki porcelain objects using professional tools.

Lacquer Decoration Experience

Starting from the Edo period, the arts and craft in Kanazawa flourished under the patronage of the Maeda clan. Among them is Kaga maki-e, whose graceful and precise patterns are created using highly developed and unique decorative techniques. Guests will learn about the history and culture of lacquer, and they will be able to experience the techniques using professional tools from Tomizo Saratani, whose skills range from restoring lacquer works to creating his own artworks.

Wagashi Sweets Making Experience

Wagashi are Japanese traditional sweets. Among them, nerikiri are made of sweetened bean paste and yam potato and they are usually served during the tea ceremony or for other special occasions. Nerikiri often allude to the ephemeral beauty found in the changing seasons, which is an important element in Japanese aesthetics. In this workshop, guests will learn the basics of nerikiri making, concepts, ingredients and techniques. Guided by the patissiere Rika Yokoya, guests will try their hand in shaping nerikiri using traditional wooden tools.

Kamisuki Paper Making Experience

Guests will immerse themselves in the traditional processes and natural plant sources of Japanese Washi paper production. Guests will make their own special postcards in the peaceful surroundings of nature in company of the artist Mika Horie. Ganpi trees are the finest material in the production of ganpi-shi paper. Guests will explore the history of paper making in the MUME art studio and enjoy the seasonal view of the mountain village.

Woodturning Experience

Yamanaka is famous for its woodturning and lacquerware and it also hosts a very prestigious school for woodturners and lacquerware artists. Graduated after a four-year program there, Terai Laku has established his woodturning studio in the mountains near Yamanaka where he crafts objects that carry on a tradition that has been passed on for more than 400 years. Guests will be able to sketch their own piece and carve it from a single block of wood. Laku will then finish it by applying the lacquer and the piece will be shipped after 3 months.
