THE STORY

Standing tall between the rugged granite mountains of the Boso Peninsula and the warm waters of Tateyama Bay is a luxury aerie called THE SHINRA, a tower ryokan with commanding natural views, resort-style design, and innovative cuisine. Native son Mamoru Kogane has leveraged his extensive local network and over two decades of experience owning hotels and restaurants in Tateyama to create a pitch perfect stay combining the best of hotel- and ryokan-style service.

Merging a recently renovated mountainside property with a striking new tower building, THE SHINRA offers eight different room styles to perfectly suit the needs of each guest, whether they prioritize space, privacy, or unparalleled vistas. Every room has ocean views and a private outdoor hot spring bath filled with deep umber waters rich in skin-beautifying minerals.

In the glass-walled restaurant, gentle candlelight cedes the stage to fiery sunsets, perfectly setting the mood for an unforgettable meal. The innovative chef turns fresh local fare like Ise lobsters and Fusehime wagyu into a border-defying kaiseki course modernized with playful presentation and surprising touches such as cacao sauce and bagna cauda dip that reveal far-flung influences. For those staying multiple nights, meals can also be arranged at Kogane-san's other restaurants, ranging from open-air beachfront barbecues to traditional kappo-style sushi.

Guests can also enjoy a sky-high communal bath, a full-service spa, and a lounge on the top floor with a self-service bar and tasty snacks made fresh in house.

Standing tall amid the stark natural beauty and gastronomic riches of Tateyama, THE SHINRA is a beacon to travelers with discerning tastes.

FACILITIES &
SERVICES

  • THE SPA 46.99 The springs feeding THE SHINRA produce soft alkaline waters rich in bicarbonate and iron, which creates their distinct reddish brown hue. The waters are said to beautify skin and relieve joint and muscle pain. Although each room has its own private bath, the infinity-style public baths located nearly 50 meters above the ground are also worth a visit, offering views of Mt. Fuji across the bay. At night, the interior lights are dimmed and LEDs embedded in the stone gives bathers the impression they are swimming among the stars. After a relaxing soak, guests can take a moment to rest in the neighboring Nest Room, where comfortable bean bag chairs and refreshing seasonal snacks like frozen yuzu jelly await.
  • The Dining 27.81 The name of the dining room comes from the fact that it sits 27.81 meters above sea level, which is clear from the moment one steps inside. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls on three sides provide panoramic views of the bay, Mt. Fuji in the distance, and fiery sunsets at dinnertime. Dark wood tables and subtle grey fabrics create a chic ambiance without distracting from the view or the food. After dark, the light from small oil lamps flickers through openwork hanging fabrics, like sparks dancing in the air, creating a romantic atmosphere perfect for a leisurely meal.
  • Cuisine As a luxury resort for food lovers, THE SHINRA's dining experience is miles above the standard ryokan meal. Drawing from Chiba Prefecture's rich bounty of seafood and produce, Chef Tanaka crafts an innovative seasonal menu of fusion cuisine. While the course format will be familiar to kaiseki aficionados, the dishes themselves are sure to surprise, incorporating far-flung ingredients like cacao and modernist techniques such as espuma and siphon brewing. Standouts like the original bagna cauda, locally sourced sashimi with walnut oil, and Ise lobster with butterbur miso are as visually impressive as they are delicious. An equally creative wine list includes rare treats like smoky-sweet aged sake and tart Georgian white wines perfect for seafood pairing.
  • Lounge Located on the top floor, over 50 meters above sea level, this inviting common area is full of comfortable modern sofas and lounge chairs from sustainable designer Karimoku and ringed by a broad veranda for open-air relaxation. Whether solo relaxing with a book or gathering with your group for pre- or post-prandials, the spacious layout provides plenty of room to spread out without disturbing others, and with glass walls on three sides, there are commanding views of both the sea and the surrounding green-swathed hills. From 3 to 10pm, guests are treated to a complimentary selection of snacks made fresh by the chef and free-flow drinks that include beer, sparkling wine, cocktails, and fresh juice.
  • Kanou-no-mori Kanou no Mori is a ladies-only full-service spa focusing on aromatherapy, although men can book a service along with a female companion. The private treatment room accommodates up to two people and is located in an isolated corner of the property to ensure perfect quiet and a relaxing escape. Shiatsu and other massages that do not use oil can also be performed in-room. Guests can reserve treatments either at the front desk or using the tablet provided in each room.
