THE STORY

This elegant ryokan boasts a modern design, with fabulous views over Sagami Bay and first-class service.
Sekaie, whose name translates roughly as “World House,” operates under the theme “Inbound and Health,” meaning they’re especially welcoming to visitors from abroad, and they gear their offerings – cuisine, activities and services – toward optimum health and vitality. Needless to say, all rooms and facilities are nonsmoking (although there is a smoking room if you’re desperate).
The facilities and rooms are all comfortable and quiet, and boast top-of-the-line fittings and amenities; all rooms also have rotemburo open-air baths that look out onto lovely, restful views over Sagami Bay and the town of Atami.
The ryokan boasts an abundance of art, mostly pieces from the collection of owner Kenichi Omae, including some paintings that are registered national treasures.
All this, and the premium omotenashi – traditional Japanese hospitality – for which ryokan are famous, make Atami Sekaie an excellent base for exploring the area, or as a destination in itself.

FACILITIES &
SERVICES

  • Baths The main bath, Koumei no Yu, is a huge granite swimming-pool-size tub, with floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open to allow access to the fresh open breezes. The hot spring water, free-flowing from the hot spring source, is full of dissolved minerals that help alleviate a host of ailments, both physical and spiritual. The women’s tub is black granite, with a red granite bottom; the men’s side is the same arrangement, with hues that are darker and more masculine.
Both sides also feature a small round pool filled with regular, and rather bracing, mountain water, as well as a Swedish-style dry sauna.
Outside the bath is Moai, a sitting and chilling lounge, with easy chairs, complementary refreshments, and a pleasant garden view to rest your eyes on.
  • Restaurant Tsukushi Atami Sekaie’s restaurant, Tsukushi, has both interior private dining booths and window tables looking out onto spectacular views of Sagami Bay. Various styles of kaiseki ryori Japanese traditional cuisine are on offer here, all served fresh, delicious and with the artistic flair for which kaiseki is known. Styles include traditional kaiseki, vegetarian kaiseki, and halal-certified kaiseki for Muslim guests. There is also a “fasting” menu (many guests come here for rejuvenating multi-day fasting retreats), which consists of soup and small amounts of food for a few days, then water only.
The cuisine makes full use of the local bounty, as proper kaiseki does, and in this case the emphasis is on local seafood and mountain vegetables. The region’s cuisine has been evolving and developing for millennia, and is as healthy as it is delicious.
You might like to wash down all this fine food with some of the local sake and beer – Atami Beer is a particularly fine micro-brewed pilsner – and renowned sake. Tsukushi also has an extensive cellar stocked with fine wines, sake, shochu and other beverages.
  • Lounge Lookout Lounge Lookout, Sekaie’s bar, is stocked with a comprehensive collection of fine wines, sake, shochu and spirits.
  • Konpeki Terrace The rooftop Konpeki Terrace faces east, over Sagami Bay – making it the perfect place to contemplate a spectacular sunrise while you enjoy breakfast, and a premium location to view the fireworks displays, both the regular ones over the harbor and the grander, twice-yearly ones launched just down the hill from Sekaie.
