THE STORY

The pretty streets of Kanazawa are like a time capsule, transporting you back to a simpler time, when the city’s Higashi Chaya neighborhood was a bustling entertainment district that is still widely known as “Little Kyoto.”
The lovely ryokan Kanazawa Maki no Oto fits seamlessly into this milieu. Opened only two years ago, this small family establishment is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a more tranquil pace of life amid a bounty of beautiful things and get a taste of authentic traditional Japan. It is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding neighborhoods, with their beautifully maintained historical houses, traditional arts and handicrafts, and gardens.
Maki no Oto Kanazawa differs from its rural cousin, Maki no Oto Toyama, with its old-style traditional urban vibe, which neatly matches the atmosphere of the surrounding district. The building has won an award from the city of Kanazawa for architecture and design that enhanced the beauty and authenticity of the famous old town. Some of the older locals said that seeing it took them back to an earlier time.

FACILITIES &
SERVICES

  • Entrance & Lobby Maki no Oto is an enthusiastic contributor to the surrounding old neighborhood. The entrance is small and nondescript, and the facade fits seamlessly into the traditional streetscape of central Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya district.
Inside, the lobby is elegant, modern and inviting. Its shop offers locally made glassware and other fine crafts, as well as Maki no Oto’s exquisite chocolates and ice cream.
  • Dining The restaurant, Wakon, is closely intertwined with Maki no Oto and its concept of mixing traditional Japan and modern luxury. The cuisine is kaiseki ryori (traditional Japanese haute cuisine) served Kappo-style – that is, at the counter with the chef working in front of the diners and responding to their requests. All 10 seats at the counter have a clear view of the chef doing frying fish, cutting sashimi, grilling various things – a fascinating display.
The restaurant’s windows look out onto the ryokan’s garden, which, rather than being designed as a conventional Japanese garden, instead expresses the concept of satoyama, the traditional landscape and lifestyle that has existed since time immemorial in Japan’s countryside.
The ryokan also boasts an extensive wine collection, presided over by an expert sommelier adept at suggesting wine as well as the local sake, for which Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures are famous.
  • Cuisine Maki no Oto’s cafe expresses the concept of “macha and chocolate,” serving coffee, home-made chocolates and macha tea served in the traditional way. It also offers four flavors of exquisite chocolates, all of them made in-house – kocha (black tea), bocha (twig tea), sake (made from junmai ginjo sake produced in the area), and – Maki no Oto’s original flavor and a must-try – dried persimmon soaked in rum.
The cafe is a great place to relax and have a drink or coffee after dinner at Wakon.

  • Gallery Also affiliated with Maki no Oto Kanazawa is the Edge Gallery, a venue devoted to having Maki no Oto’s guests connect with some of the excellent artists and craftspeople in the Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui areas. Fine glassware and pottery are on offer, as are silk creations, special foods, leather goods, eyeglasses and premium umbrellas made in Fukui. The second floor is devoted to young and upcoming artists in the area.
