The Story

The pretty streets of Kanazawa are like a time capsule, transporting you back to a simpler time, when the city’s Higashi Chaya neighborhood was a bustling entertainment district that is still widely known as “Little Kyoto.”

The lovely ryokan Kanazawa Maki no Oto fits seamlessly into this milieu. Opened in 2015, this small establishment is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a more tranquil pace of life amid a bounty of beautiful things and get a taste of authentic traditional Japan. It is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding neighborhoods, with their beautifully maintained historical houses, traditional arts and handicrafts, and gardens.

Maki no Oto Kanazawa differs from its rural cousin, Maki no Oto Toyama, with its old-style traditional urban vibe, which neatly matches the atmosphere of the surrounding district. The building has won an award from the city of Kanazawa for architecture and design that enhanced the beauty and authenticity of the famous old town. Some of the older locals said that seeing it took them back to an earlier time.

DINNER

Auberge Maki no Oto Kanazawa believes that meals while traveling are an important time to nurture precious memories of the guests’ trip and their souls. For those who value food during their travels, Kanazawa is a wonderful city with many dining options, rich in food from the mountains and sea, chefs, and culture. The ryokan would like you to enjoy the best dinner trip in Kanazawa, in addition to their Japanese restaurant, Higashiyama Wakon, so they have formed close partnerships with famous local restaurants outside the ryokan to offer the guests Kanazawa's exclusive gourmet cuisine in a variety of genres.

Auberge Maki no Oto Kanazawa is an unconventional auberge. In addition to the chefs at Higashiyama Wakon, the chefs at each famous restaurant love the local area and entertain guests with exquisite dishes.

Enjoy a dinner trip to Kanazawa, the city of gastronomy, through Auberge Maki no Oto Kanazawa.

BREAKFAST

Breakfast is only served in Western style. The parfait-like salad with seasonal fruits and vegetables is beautifully presented on a plate, and the freshly baked croissants are crispy and have a distinct aroma of Japanese wheat. The handmade roasted onion sauce helps you enjoy the delicious taste of vegetables, which is just exquisite.

Entrance & Lobby Maki no Oto is an enthusiastic contributor to the surrounding old neighborhood. The entrance is small and nondescript, and the facade fits seamlessly into the traditional streetscape of central Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya district. Inside, the lobby is elegant, modern and inviting.
Dining The Japanese restaurant attached to the first floor of the main building, Higashiyama Wakon, is closely intertwined with Maki no Oto and its concept of mixing traditional Japan and modern luxury. The cuisine is kaiseki ryori (traditional Japanese haute cuisine) served Kappo-style – that is, at the counter with the chef working in front of the diners. All 10 seats at the counter have a clear view of the chef doing frying fish, cutting sashimi, grilling various things – a fascinating display. The restaurant’s windows look out onto the ryokan’s garden, which can clearly be seen from the two seats at the table. Rather than being designed as a conventional Japanese garden, the garden expresses the concept of satoyama, the traditional landscape and lifestyle that has existed in Japan’s countryside since time immemorial. The ryokan also boasts an extensive wine collection and the local sake, for which Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures are famous. They can suggest pairings, including wine and local sake.
Collaboration with a wide range of local partner restaurants Auberge Maki no Oto Kanazawa’s dinner style is unique. In addition to the Japanese restaurant at the facility, Higashiyama Wakon, the guests can also go out and enjoy Kanazawa's gourmet cuisine for dinner at famous restaurants. A variety of genres is available, and the ryokan can arrange dinner at popular restaurants such as sushi, teppanyaki, soba kaiseki, tempura, and Western cuisine. However, all restaurants have limited seating capacity and are very popular, so they recommend making a request as early as possible. (Reservations cannot be made the day before and on the day of arrival.
A special experience plan to experience the culture of Kanazawa Enjoy a special moment by staying in the Higashi Chaya District. After dinner, the ryokan would take you to their familiar tea shop, which is not open to first-time customers. A sophisticated way to play is to surrender to the tea shop’s proprietress so that you can enjoy the traditional culture and the essence of hospitality established by Kanazawa geisha. The special plan includes geisha entertainment with traditional music and dances provided by three geishas. (approximately 2 hours)
