THE STORY

With a focus on dining and art, The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami is a ryokan with a modern edge, and offers an appealing destination for discerning travelers. The concept is that of a very exclusive, high-end French auberge – a dining destination with rooms for overnight stays. Mr Hiroyuki Hiramatsu, executive chef and the founder of the company, fell in love with France at an early age, and returned there numerous times as he built his group of fine restaurants. He noted that some of the finest restaurants in France are in quite out-of-the way places, and many of them have simple accommodations to save their guests from having to make the long trip home after their meal. He decided to bring the concept to Japan.
Everywhere in The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami, both the art and the architecture express the fusion of East and West, Japanese and European – fantastic paintings by surrealist Joan Miro and landscape painter Tamako Kataoka grace many of the walls, and numerous works of shodo calligraphy by Yuichi Inoue provide both traditional sensibility and modern dynamism.
The building itself was built around a traditional besso, or country villa, slightly modernized but with its beautiful architectural lines and gorgeous interior maintained.
The result is a lovely and practical blend of luxurious tradition and innovative modern design that make staying at The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami an experience to remember.

FACILITIES &
SERVICES

  • Entrance & Lobby In the Entrance Lobby, arriving guests are greeted by a big, bold work of shodo calligraphy by Yuichi Inoue which expresses perfectly the experience to come – the Hiramatsu & Resorts Atami’s unique blend of modern dynamism and the ancient sensibility of traditional omotenashi hospitality.
The ryokan’s Lounge boasts fine old woodwork and comfortable lounge chairs, as well as an outdoor terrace with comfortable lounge chairs and lovely views over Sagami Bay.
  • Cuisine At The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami, the focus is on food – hardly surprising as the company is primarily a high-end restaurant company. Chef Katsuya Miura works culinary magic with the local seafood and produce, artfully producing a distinctive fusion of French and Japanese sensibilities that has won him fans among Hiramatsu’s legions of loyal customers.
  • Dining The dining room is small and intimate, and the expert wait staffs are adept and attentive, helping to ensure an unsurpassed dining experience. In the evenings, torches provide a lovely warm light over the infinity pool outside, and during the day, the views over Sagami Bay are spectacular.
  • Art & Architecture The art at The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami is, as at the other ryokan in the group, exquisite. The paintings – primarily surrealist works by Joan Miro and vivid landscapes by Tamako Kataoka – are both gorgeous in themselves and the perfect choice to complement the tone of The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami experience, fusing modern/traditional as well as Japanese/European influences. (1/3)
  • Art & Architecture The ryokan’s rooms and Japanese–style suites boast dynamic shodo characters by renowned calligrapher Yuichi Inoue. A collection of beautifully detailed model ships contribute to establishing a sense of place by recalling the Atami region’s centuries of maritime heritage.
Architect Yasumichi Morita designed the ryokan around an existing besso, or country villa, built 40 years ago by master builder Koichi Kinoshita. (2/3)
  • Art & Architecture The building, with the simple, elegant lines of its Sukiya Zukuri traditional residential architecture, was refurbished, and some necessary modern touches added, but Morita left intact the lovely and warm interior wood, as well as the exterior, beautifully weathered by the salt and wind of its coastal location. Two additional floors were added, anchored solidly to the steep hillside overlooking Sagami Bay. (3/3)
