Charter plan for a tailored group escapeOmotenashi Journey: from the world to Kaga

The Story

Perched on a hill overlooking Yamashiro Onsen town, Ishikawa Prefecture, Beniya Mukayu offers a perfect blend of friendly, attentive service and serene tranquility in harmony with nature.

Mukayu means "richness in emptiness": through the architecture and minimal interior design, the ryokan makes the most of its natural blessings and brings the natural world and indoor spaces together.

Kaga region has been a destination for seekers of inner peace and physical healing for over 1,300 years. A famous Zen Buddhist temple once thrived where Beniya Mukayu now stands. The ryokan takes as its inspiration the clean, spare lines of Zen to encourage peace and serenity in harmony with nature. Surely there is no more perfect place to watch the march of the seasons than from the warm comfort of the private open-air hot spring baths available in each room.
In addition, the signature Yakushiyama (Healing Buddha Mountain) treatments of the Spa Entei and the Yakushiyama amenities represent a homage to the local history, making guests feel cleansed and rejuvenated.

Scrumptious dinners and breakfasts are served in the Horin restaurant, a dining hall overlooking the natural garden. The “Rin” in the word “Horin” means “together”: it is a place for people to come together and sense new things.

A wide range of tailor-made, unique experiences is available to guests staying for two nights or more to complement the ryokan stay.

Beniya Mukayu is a family business: the owners and staff members welcome guests like family. Founded in 1928, Mukayu is now run by the third generation of the Nakamichi family under the friendly, watchful eye of the okami, or proprietress, Mrs. Sachiko Nakamichi.

The guests' happiness and comfort are paramount. As Mrs. Sachiko Nakamichi says, "We want our guests to feel like this is their besso or traditional private villa. Here at Beniya Mukayu, guests can find their “richness in emptiness.”

Bath Beniya Mukayu has two communal baths: GENSEI, a bath for tranquil meditation featuring a round backrest in the bathtub; USUKO, a bath made of white cypress wood for purifying the body and mind. Each communal bath features an indoor bath, an open-air bath, and sauna. They are available to all guests, separated by gender. Boasting more than 1300 years history, the source of renowned Yamashiro Onsen contains high concentration of calcium, sodium and sulfate that not only improves blood circulation and soothes fatigue by thermal effects, but also improves physical and dermatology condition.
Spa The Spa Entei carries on a centuries-long healing tradition with the local Yamashiro hot spring water and medicinal herbs. Along with its signature Yakushiyama (Healing Buddha’s Mountain) treatments, reflexology, and other massage techniques, the spa features herbal balls, steamed, and applied to specific points on the body, for a divinely relaxing experience. These treatments are a perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. The Spa Entei also features a signature line of skincare products, the Yakushiyama amenities.
Cuisine Beniya Mukayu is justly renowned for its food - the ryokan serves traditional Japanese kaiseki cuisine that draws its ingredients from the surrounding Kaga area. Freshly caught fish and shellfish in the local waters of the Sea of Japan and fresh vegetables, meat and other ingredients from local farms are the basis of Beniya Mukayu’s cuisine.

Meals are created by drawing on tradition and imagination, inspired by the seasons and served on exquisite tableware such as Kutani porcelain and Yamanaka lacquerware, some of it antique. The meals are all served at the Horin restaurant, and they are enhanced by the delicious local sake and signature white and red wines. Western breakfast is available upon request, and Beniya Mukayu’s kitchen can accommodate special dietary requirements if noticed when booking.
Lobby The ryokan's lobby is a common space where guests can relax, and new arrivals can shift into a Mukayu frame of mind. The space features elegant, Zen-inspired simplicity; horizontal and vertical windows give a perfect perspective on the play of nature outside in the garden. Staff at the reception desk are always ready to attend to guests' needs.
Shop Beniya Mukayu's signature Yakushiyama amenities and a selection of locally made ceramics, lacquerware, artworks, and food can be purchased in the shop and on mukayu.com.
Horin restaurant All meals are served in the Horin restaurant, a dining hall that opens onto a spacious terrace overlooking the garden. The cool breezes and natural sounds drifting in enhance the atmosphere of simple coexistence with nature. The “Rin” in the word “Horin” means “together”: it is a place for people to come together and sense new things.
Garden Beniya Mukayu's beautiful garden is expansive and serene, with mossy paths winding through it. It is home to a host of venerable trees, including enormous red pines, maples, camellia, and a very old Yamazakura (mountain cherry tree) that sends petals drifting about like snow in spring. During the daytime, the garden generates a symphony of frog, bird, and insect calls, the sounds of crickets and whispering breezes rise to lull Mukayu's guests into a deep, restful sleep. It is a four-season garden - in spring, cherry blossoms drift about, heralding the awakening of a new season; in summer, it offers cool relief and long, lazy evenings; autumn sees a riot of color as the maple and larch leaves turn; and in winter guests can enjoy the muffled silence of the snow-covered garden as well as the magical experience of bathing outdoors in their private hot spring bath overlooking the garden as snowflakes drift down.
Yakushiyama amenities The Yakushiyama Amenities are a line of skincare products that combine natural ingredients with the latest cutting-edge skincare technologies. The amenities were designed by Mukayu’s proprietress Sachiko Nakamichi, and include shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, cleansing gel, facial wash, lotion, and emulsion. There is also a line of essential oils for use in aromatherapy. These products are unique to Mukayu. It took three years to develop them, incorporating the famous Yamashiro hot spring water and other natural ingredients. The Yakushiyama amenities are available in the rooms as well as in the communal baths, and the Spa Entei. They can also be purchased at the shop and on mukayu.com.
Art & Architecture The architect Sey Takeyama has been collaborating with Beniya Mukayu since 1996, designing minimalistic spaces that are like empty vessels, receptacles both for the garden spectacle and for the time spent there. To relax at Beniya Mukayu means to empty the soul and fully enjoy a time with nothing to do. Naturally, something starts to emanate from the bottom of the soul, awakening the senses to nature and the artworks quietly featured inside and outside the ryokan.
Tsukubai "Ho-sun" At the entrance of the Spa Entei, guests can appreciate a large round pond with the sculpture “Tsukubai Ho-sun” designed by Kenya Hara. The water descends and is released into a big shallow cone, just as a river flows into the sea. The sculpture was originally designed for the project “T-Room” curated by the architect Kengo Kuma at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in 2005 and then relocated at Beniya Mukayu in 2006.

Near Yamanaka Onsen once lay Wagatani village, flooded in 1965 to make room for a dam. Its residents crafted chestnut wood shingles and distinct trays with grooved patterns for serving tea or tobacco. After nearly vanishing with the village, a few artisans in Ishikawa have been reviving this simple yet beautiful craft for the past 20 years. One of them, the German-born, Yamanaka Onsen-based woodworker Rabea Gebler, will introduce you to the story of this nearly lost tradition and help you carve your own Wagatabon tray.
