THE RYOKAN COLLECTION
ART
Art
The art collection spans contemporary pieces commissioned for the hotel to ceramics from the prehistoric Jomon Period (14,000–300 BCE) that were unearthed during the construction of the hotel. Fitting for a Japanese brand that grew out of a French restaurant, art that bridges Occident and Orient features heavily, including photography from Man Ray and Darren Almond, Venetian-style glassworks from Ritsue Mishima, and calligraphy-influenced paintings by Kyoji Takubo, whose panels depicting Miyota’s abundant apple trees grace the lobby lounge. Despite their diverse media and provenance, the earthy tones, natural materials, and subtle whimsy of the works strike a harmonious balance that sings with understated luxury.
